The VNREDSat-1 satellite program represents a significant milestone in the collaboration between Vietnam and France in space technology, laying the groundwork for future advancements in next-generation satellites, technology transfer, and enhanced domestic capabilities. Launched on May 7, 2013, VNREDSat-1 is Vietnam’s inaugural Earth observation satellite, officially becoming operational in September of that year. Remarkably, it continues to function in 2026, far surpassing its initial five-year lifespan and completing 14 years in service.
This initiative has been instrumental in expanding Vietnam’s expertise beyond just satellite operations. Between 2011 and 2013, Vietnamese engineers underwent intensive training in both France and Vietnam, gaining skills in system design, satellite operations, and troubleshooting. Over time, they have transitioned from merely following transferred procedures to independently resolving technical issues, showcasing their growing proficiency and autonomy in the field.
Additionally, Vietnam has established a comprehensive remote-sensing system that encompasses imaging requests, satellite control, data reception, processing, storage, and distribution. Since 2020, the VNREDSat-1 has provided nearly 30,000 satellite images, supporting various applications including environmental and natural resource management, disaster monitoring, scientific research, socio-economic development, and activities related to defense and security. According to Trần Hồng Thái, President of the Vietnam Academy of Science and Technology, the program has laid a critical foundation for future satellite projects, though he emphasizes the need for further technological self-reliance in areas such as satellite design, payloads, electronics, and ground systems.
A new chapter in this bilateral cooperation began during French President Emmanuel Macron’s visit to Vietnam in May 2025, marked by a declaration of intent signed by the Vietnam Academy of Science and Technology, Airbus Defence and Space, and the French National Centre for Space Studies to pursue long-term collaboration in space technology and Earth observation. This partnership seeks to develop a next-generation Earth observation system, with potential plans for a VNREDSat-2 in the pipeline.
The future of this cooperation aims to emphasize greater Vietnamese involvement in mission planning, system design, subsystem development, software, testing, and data applications. Opportunities for Vietnam to build stronger domestic expertise could arise in areas such as control software, remote-sensing image processing, artificial intelligence, ground systems, and selected sensors and payloads. The overarching goal is to transition from purchasing satellite systems to co-developing and mastering the technology, enabling Vietnamese scientists and engineers to progressively design, operate, troubleshoot, and ultimately develop future generations of satellite technology independently.
