The Pheu Thai Party has rejected suggestions that recent tensions along the Thai-Cambodian border are the result of personal or political rivalries between the Shinawatra and Hun Sen families. Instead, the party asserts that Phnom Penh’s dissatisfaction with Thailand’s clampdown on Cambodia-based online scam operations is the true source of the unrest.
Danuporn Punnakanta, Member of Parliament and spokesman for the Pheu Thai Party, stated on Sunday that the friction has emerged from Cambodia’s frustration over Thailand’s efforts to dismantle cross-border cybercrime networks. He noted Cambodia’s decision to distance itself from a proposed trilateral task force—comprising Thailand, Laos, and Myanmar—intended to combat transnational online fraud. Cambodian leaders have insisted on addressing such issues independently.
“This is not a matter of political families or personal feuds,” said Danuporn. “The root cause is the ongoing crackdown on scam operations, which has had repercussions for influential figures in Cambodia. Evidence continues to mount in support of this.”
Among the key developments cited was the Thai arrest warrant for Kok An, a Cambodian national alleged to be a prominent backer of scam networks and known associate of Cambodian Senate President Hun Sen. Thai authorities have frozen substantial assets linked to scam operations and are cooperating with Interpol to pursue legal proceedings.
While acknowledging the current strain along the border, Danuporn assured the public that Thai security agencies are maintaining full control and have enacted comprehensive measures to safeguard public safety and de-escalate tensions.
He emphasized the government’s commitment to a diplomatic resolution, highlighting that the Foreign Ministry has established a task force to evaluate global ramifications, coordinate with international partners, and prepare humanitarian responses in the event of prolonged hostilities.
“Our priority is to protect lives, ensure national security, and uphold diplomatic engagement to manage this issue through peaceful and lawful means,” the Pheu Thai spokesperson affirmed.
