Thailand Halts 60-Day Visa-Free Travel for Indian Citizens

Thailand is set to revert to stricter visa requirements, ending a temporary 60-day visa-free entry scheme that had been available to tourists from several nations, including India. This policy shift is likely to impact Indian travelers as they plan their future visits to this favored Asian holiday spot. Under the new rules, Indian citizens must now obtain a Visa on Arrival (VoA) upon entering Thailand or secure an e-Visa prior to their trip.

The revised visa policy shortens the duration of stay for Indian tourists to a maximum of 15 days per entry under the Visa on Arrival option, significantly less than the previous 60-day allowance. Travelers looking to bypass queues at the airport can utilize Thailand’s e-Visa system to apply online before departure. Industry analysts suggest that this change might deter spontaneous travel and last-minute bookings due to the additional visa application process and fees. Nonetheless, the allure of Thailand, with its affordable travel options, convenient flight links, varied tourist attractions, and robust hospitality sector, is expected to continue drawing Indian tourists.

The policy change is anticipated to have a more pronounced effect on long-term visitors, digital nomads, and those planning extended multi-city trips. Travelers in search of longer, more flexible stays might explore other Southeast Asian destinations that offer more lenient entry requirements. The new regulations will be enforced 15 days following their announcement in the Royal Gazette, with travelers entering before this period remaining subject to the previous rules until their visa expires.

Initially, Thailand had expanded visa-free access in 2024 to boost tourism and stimulate economic recovery post-pandemic. This initiative succeeded in increasing visitor numbers and reinforcing Thailand’s appeal as a top choice for leisure travel, family vacations, and special events. However, the decision to tighten entry rules now stems from concerns over visa overstays, unauthorized business activities, and the necessity for enhanced immigration oversight. The updated framework aims to balance the growth of tourism with effective border management and regulatory control.

Those planning to visit Thailand are encouraged to check the latest visa requirements and entry guidelines before making travel arrangements to ensure a seamless travel experience. This careful preparation will help travelers navigate the new visa landscape efficiently and enjoy their time in Thailand without any hitches.
