Vietnam’s VNREDSat-1 satellite program has been a cornerstone for enhanced collaboration with France in the realm of space technology. This partnership is anticipated to evolve, concentrating on next-generation satellites, technology transfer, training, and bolstering Vietnam’s domestic capabilities. Launched on May 7, 2013, as Vietnam’s inaugural Earth observation satellite, VNREDSat-1 was officially operational by September that year. Remarkably, despite a projected lifespan of five years, the satellite continues to function effectively into 2026, marking its 14th year in orbit.
The program has significantly advanced Vietnam’s expertise in satellite operations and beyond. Between 2011 and 2013, Vietnamese engineers underwent rigorous training in both France and Vietnam, mastering skills in system design, satellite operations, and troubleshooting. This training enabled them to transition from merely following transferred procedures to independently resolving technical issues. Additionally, Vietnam has developed a comprehensive remote-sensing system that includes imaging request management, satellite control, data reception, processing, storage, and distribution. Since 2020, VNREDSat-1 has produced nearly 30,000 satellite images, supporting activities such as environmental management, disaster monitoring, scientific research, socio-economic development, and national defense and security.
According to Trần Hồng Thái, President of the Vietnam Academy of Science and Technology, the program laid a crucial technical and human-resource groundwork for upcoming satellite initiatives. Nonetheless, he emphasized the necessity for Vietnam to enhance technological self-reliance by advancing satellite design, payloads, electronics, flight software, assembly, integration, testing, and ground systems.
A new chapter of cooperation unfolded during French President Emmanuel Macron’s state visit to Vietnam in May 2025. During this visit, the Vietnam Academy of Science and Technology, Airbus Defence and Space, and the French National Centre for Space Studies signed a declaration of intent to pursue long-term collaboration in space technology and Earth observation. This partnership is exploring options for a next-generation Earth observation system and the proposed VNREDSat-2.
Future collaborations are likely to emphasize Vietnamese involvement in mission planning, system design, subsystem development, software, testing, and data applications. Critical areas such as control software, remote-sensing image processing, artificial intelligence, ground systems, and selected sensors and payloads offer Vietnam opportunities to enhance its domestic expertise. The overarching goal is to progress from acquiring satellite systems towards co-development and technological mastery, enabling Vietnamese scientists and engineers to eventually design, operate, troubleshoot, and develop future satellite technologies independently.
