In a bold diplomatic maneuver, the US president is set to host the leaders of Central Asia’s five nations on November 6, signaling a direct challenge to Russian and Chinese influence in the resource-rich region.
The summit, which has been confirmed by the presidents of Kazakhstan and Kyrgyzstan, is a clear sign that the United States is stepping up its game. Russia’s traditional dominance has been weakened by its war in Ukraine, creating a power vacuum.
China and the EU have also been quick to act, hosting their own summits to woo the five former Soviet states. Now, Washington is making its play for a stronger diplomatic and economic footprint.
The stakes are high. The region, though sparsely populated, is a treasure trove of natural resources, including rare earths vital for modern technology. It also represents a critical land bridge for global trade.
While three of the five presidents have yet to confirm their attendance, the planned summit marks a significant escalation in the new “Great Game” for influence and access in Central Asia.
