Vietnam and Laos Leaders Reaffirm Commitment to Strengthen Bilateral Relations

Vietnamese Prime Minister Lê Minh Hưng and Lao National Assembly President Sonexay Siphandone have pledged to deepen bilateral cooperation between their two countries, focusing on tangible results across various sectors. The commitment was reaffirmed during Hưng’s official visit to Vientiane on October 8, marking his first visit to Laos since becoming Vietnam’s prime minister.

In their discussions, the leaders underscored the longstanding friendship and strategic partnership between Vietnam and Laos. They acknowledged progress in political, defense, security, and economic relations, emphasizing the importance of fostering collaboration in areas such as education, transport, energy, and culture. The meeting highlighted the need to implement existing agreements and commitments, aiming to convert diplomatic understanding into concrete outcomes.

Efforts to enhance the business environment were also discussed, with both leaders agreeing to address regulatory challenges and expedite key economic projects to boost investment. Hưng urged the Lao National Assembly to back policies that facilitate resource mobilization and improve conditions for Vietnamese and Lao businesses operating in each other’s markets.

The importance of cooperation between the national legislatures was stressed, with plans for delegation exchanges and sharing legislative experiences. This engagement extends to regional and international parliamentary forums, where closer coordination is seen as essential.

Both countries identified people-to-people exchanges, particularly involving younger generations, as a priority. Initiatives to promote awareness of shared history and strengthen public understanding of their enduring friendship were agreed upon.

Preparations are underway for the Vietnam–Laos and Laos–Vietnam Year of Solidarity, Friendship and Cohesion in 2027, commemorating the 65th anniversary of diplomatic relations and the 50th anniversary of the Treaty of Amity and Cooperation. Both leaders reiterated the strategic importance of maintaining strong bilateral ties amid evolving regional and international dynamics, committing to ongoing coordination on development priorities and agreement implementation to benefit both nations.
