Vietnam and Norway have committed to enhancing bilateral cooperation in trade, renewable energy, and maritime development as they approach 55 years of diplomatic relations. This agreement was reached during a meeting in Hanoi between Vietnamese Deputy Foreign Minister Le Thi Thu Hang and Norwegian State Secretary Astrid Bergmål. The discussions focused on expanding economic and diplomatic ties, with both countries reaffirming their dedication to strengthening political dialogue.
A significant outcome of the meeting was the discussion surrounding the recently concluded Free Trade Agreement between Vietnam and the European Free Trade Association (EFTA) member states. After 14 years of negotiations, Deputy Foreign Minister Hang urged the involved parties to expedite ratification procedures to facilitate implementation. This agreement is anticipated to enhance market access, foster business partnerships, and provide stability for investors.
The countries also highlighted their Green Strategic Partnership, established in April, as a pivotal initiative for sustainable development and energy transition. Vietnam encouraged Norwegian businesses and financial entities to increase their investments in renewable energy, shipbuilding, maritime transport, port infrastructure, logistics, and high-tech aquaculture. Norway, in turn, expressed interest in expanding cooperation in marine management, sustainable aquaculture, green shipping, and the circular economy.
Both nations are keen on sharing technology and expertise to advance carbon neutrality and strengthen energy security. Regional cooperation was another focal point, with Vietnam and Norway agreeing to collaborate more closely within the ASEAN-Norway partnership from 2026 to 2030. This collaboration will concentrate on the blue economy, energy transition, connectivity, innovation, and sustainable development.
The discussion also covered the importance of reinforcing coordination between their foreign ministries and mutual support in international forums, including the United Nations. The emphasis was placed on the significance of free trade, adherence to international law, and the 1982 United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea.
This meeting underscored Vietnam and Norway’s shared commitment to expanding economic opportunities, strengthening diplomatic relations, and advancing sustainable growth.
