Vietnam is seeking enhanced support from international organizations to bolster its economic ambitions. Deputy Prime Minister Nguyễn Văn Thắng, during his meetings in Switzerland, emphasized the need for the World Trade Organization (WTO) and the World Economic Forum (WEF) to play a more significant role in advancing Vietnam’s trade, investment, and economic development goals.
Thắng underscored Vietnam’s dedication to a rules-based global trading environment and urged the WTO to expedite its reform processes. A key focus of his appeal was the restoration of the WTO’s dispute settlement mechanism and an expansion of its agenda to incorporate emerging issues such as digital trade, artificial intelligence, climate change, and supply chain resilience.
In light of Vietnam’s ambition to become a high-income economy by the year 2045, Thắng encouraged the WEF to intensify its collaboration with Vietnam. He called for increased efforts in fostering investment, innovation, public-private partnerships, and the establishment of international financial centers, which are crucial components of Vietnam’s economic strategy.
Officials from both the WTO and WEF responded positively to Vietnam’s initiatives, acknowledging the country’s economic reforms. They assured continued cooperation, particularly in the areas of trade, investment, and capacity-building initiatives, which are vital for Vietnam’s sustained economic growth.
The discussions in Switzerland highlight Vietnam’s proactive approach in engaging with global economic institutions to secure support for its long-term development objectives, demonstrating the country’s commitment to integrating into and benefiting from the global economy.
