Uber Buys Delivery Hero for $14.8 Billion in Major Acquisition

Uber Technologies is set to bolster its global food delivery services by acquiring Delivery Hero, a German-based company, in a transaction valued at $14.8 billion. This significant purchase will extend Uber’s reach across 50 international markets, further solidifying its position in the competitive food delivery industry.

The agreement states that Uber will acquire Delivery Hero’s primary global business at a price of €41.50, which is approximately $47.60, per share. Additionally, the deal includes the acquisition of shares from Prosus, a major investor in Delivery Hero. This strategic move aligns with Uber’s continuous efforts to expand its international presence in the food delivery sector.

In a related transaction, SSW Partners, an investment firm, will purchase operations in 14 different markets for about $1.6 billion. These assets, which encompass businesses in Austria, Norway, Spain, and Sweden, are intended to be sold separately by SSW, indicating a strategic divestiture plan.

The acquisition occurs amid a wave of consolidation in the global food-delivery market, which has been experiencing rapid expansion since the Covid-19 pandemic. As competition intensifies, major players in the industry are increasingly looking towards mergers and acquisitions to enhance their market positions. Uber’s strategic acquisition reflects this broader trend, as the company has been actively pursuing international growth opportunities in recent years.

Meanwhile, Delivery Hero had initiated a strategic review due to investor pressure for restructuring and additional asset sales. The deal with Uber represents a significant shift in the company’s strategy, potentially reshaping its operational focus. By integrating Delivery Hero’s capabilities, Uber aims to significantly boost its footprint in the global food delivery landscape, reinforcing its competitive edge in a rapidly evolving market.
