Vietnam, Laos Boost 2026 Trade, Investment, and Infrastructure Ties

Vietnam and Laos have reaffirmed their commitment to enhancing their cooperation across various sectors as they review the progress of their 2026 cooperation plan. During a mid-year meeting held in Da Nang, representatives from both countries evaluated the achievements of the past eight months and identified key priorities for the rest of the year. The discussions emphasized strengthening collaboration in investment, trade, infrastructure, energy, and human resource development.

The economic ties between the two nations have seen significant growth, with Vietnamese enterprises initiating 20 new investment projects in Laos valued at $638.3 million in the first seven months of 2026. Laos continues to be the foremost destination for Vietnam’s overseas investments, hosting approximately 300 projects backed by Vietnamese capital, amounting to over $7 billion. The bilateral trade figures for the first half of 2026 reached around $1.3 billion, reflecting the deepening economic cooperation between the two countries.

In addition to economic ventures, Vietnam and Laos are making strides in the fields of energy, transport, construction, and infrastructure connectivity. These sectors are crucial for fostering a robust partnership and ensuring sustainable development in both nations. Furthermore, education and human resource development remain vital components of their cooperation strategy. Vietnam is set to provide 1,300 scholarships to Lao students this year and has earmarked $43 million in aid to Laos as part of a broader assistance program spanning from 2026 to 2030.

The meeting also highlighted the importance of improving the coordination on major projects and addressing investment challenges. Both countries are keen on enhancing their economic links not only bilaterally but also across the broader Vietnam-Laos-Cambodia region, aiming for a more integrated and dynamic economic landscape. Such initiatives are expected to bolster regional stability and prosperity, benefiting all parties involved.
