Thailand has declared Bangkok a disaster-affected area following days of heavy rainfall that have resulted in extensive flooding and severe traffic disruptions throughout the capital. The declaration encompasses all 50 districts of Bangkok, enabling authorities to implement emergency measures such as accelerating drainage operations, setting up temporary shelters, and identifying vulnerable residents, including bedridden patients.
Bangkok Governor Chadchart Sittipunt has instructed relevant agencies to coordinate these emergency responses and ensure prompt assistance to those affected by the floods. The city has recorded nearly 300 millimeters of rain since Thursday, leading to significant waterlogging and flooding across many roads in Bangkok.
The government’s declaration allows for a comprehensive assessment of damage to both public and private properties, which will facilitate the process of providing assistance and compensation to impacted communities. Authorities are working to mitigate the effects of the flooding and restore normalcy as quickly as possible.
