Thailand has successfully completed a 1.3-kilometre section of a permanent border fence with Cambodia in an effort to enhance border security after last year’s military clashes between the two nations. Located in Chanthaburi province, the newly constructed barrier is made of reinforced concrete panels topped with steel mesh and concertina wire, designed to offer long-term protection and withstand small-arms fire.
The Thai military plans to extend the fence by more than seven kilometres, connecting it to the existing section. Officials are also evaluating other parts of the 817-kilometre Thailand-Cambodia border to determine additional suitable locations for future construction. The decision on these locations will take into account the terrain and environmental conditions to ensure the practicality and sustainability of the project.
Last year’s territorial disputes between Thailand and Cambodia led to two rounds of armed conflict, which involved artillery and air strikes. These clashes resulted in significant casualties and displaced hundreds of thousands of people before separate ceasefire agreements were reached to end the hostilities.
Heightened border security remains a priority for Thailand, as the area continues to be heavily guarded following the previous conflicts. The ongoing fencing project is a part of broader efforts to maintain stability and prevent future confrontations along the border.
