Vietnam’s Prime Minister Lê Minh Hưng and Myanmar President Min Aung Hlaing met in Hà Nội on September 5 to discuss enhancing their countries’ bilateral relations. The leaders agreed to broaden cooperation in various sectors, marking Min Aung Hlaing’s first visit to Vietnam in his current capacity. Prime Minister Hưng reiterated Vietnam’s support for Myanmar’s endeavors towards national stability, reconciliation, dialogue, and economic growth. In response, President Min Aung Hlaing lauded Vietnam’s socio-economic advancements and its increasing influence on the regional and international stage, expressing a keen interest in learning from Vietnam’s development path.
Both leaders acknowledged recent strides in the relationship between their nations and pledged to boost high-level exchanges and political trust. They emphasized the need to revive key cooperative mechanisms related to trade, security, and defense. A significant area of focus is the defense and security sector, where the two countries aim to strengthen efforts against cross-border crime, cybercrime, online fraud, and drug trafficking. Plans are also in place to enhance military training, exchange programs for young officers, and cooperation on non-traditional security challenges.
Economic collaboration featured prominently in the discussions, with both sides looking to find new ways to increase trade and refresh existing agreements on trade, investment, and customs. Myanmar expressed enthusiasm for Vietnamese investments in sectors such as telecommunications, digital transformation, high-tech agriculture, aquaculture, food processing, irrigation, and infrastructure. The dialogue also covered improving infrastructure and air connectivity, with plans to restore direct flights and develop joint tourism initiatives, including spiritual and medical tourism.
On the regional front, Vietnam committed to continuing its work with ASEAN members to maintain constructive dialogue and engagement with Myanmar. Both nations emphasized the importance of resolving disputes peacefully and in accordance with international law. To strengthen this cooperation, Prime Minister Hưng invited President Min Aung Hlaing to participate in the CLMV Summit and chair the ACMECS Summit in Hà Nội scheduled for November 2026. In turn, President Min Aung Hlaing extended an invitation for Prime Minister Hưng to visit Myanmar at a time that suits both parties.
