Greece Pursues Enhanced Labor Ties with Vietnam, ASEAN Countries

Greece is focusing on enhancing labor collaboration with Vietnam and other ASEAN nations to tackle workforce shortages and bolster economic growth, Greek Minister of Migration and Asylum Athanasios Plevris stated during a recent meeting in Athens. The gathering included representatives from Vietnam, Thailand, the Philippines, and Indonesia, where the minister highlighted the importance of early bilateral labor agreements. Such agreements, he noted, would ensure the protection of workers’ and employers’ rights and aid Greece in its efforts to curb irregular migration.

Plevris explained that managing migration has become a significant concern, particularly following the European Union’s implementation of the new Pact on Migration and Asylum. This has prompted Greece to seek effective solutions through international cooperation. The minister underscored that close partnerships with ASEAN countries are crucial in addressing these challenges and emphasized the potential benefits of formalized labor agreements.

Vietnamese Ambassador Phạm Thị Thu Hương expressed optimism about the progress made in labor cooperation discussions with Greece. She conveyed hope that both nations would soon conclude a bilateral labor agreement, which she believes will open up more job opportunities for Vietnamese workers and further strengthen the diplomatic ties between the two countries. The ambassador’s comments reflect the mutual interest in advancing labor relations to benefit both economies.

Plevris responded positively to the ambassador’s remarks, instructing relevant Greek authorities to continue their negotiations with Vietnam and other ASEAN countries. The aim is to expedite the signing of labor cooperation agreements, which are seen as pivotal in enhancing Greece’s workforce and supporting its economic objectives. The ministry’s data reveals that approximately 1,700 Vietnamese workers currently hold valid residence permits in Greece, highlighting the existing labor relationship between the two countries.
