Thailand and Vietnam Form Comprehensive Strategic Partnership

Thailand and Vietnam have elevated their diplomatic ties to a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership, a significant development marking 50 years of diplomatic relations. This advancement aims to bolster cooperation in political, economic, and technological spheres. The announcement came during the official visit of Vietnamese President and Communist Party General Secretary Tô Lâm to Thailand, where both nations signed four agreements centered on economic collaboration, science and technology, education, and aviation development.

The two countries have laid out a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership Action Plan for 2026–2031, which intends to broaden their cooperation across a variety of sectors. This includes a focus on enhancing security and defense collaboration, as well as tackling transnational crimes such as online scams and illegal fishing. Economic coordination to navigate global uncertainties and support the private sector is also a priority under this new partnership.

Trade between Thailand and Vietnam is set to increase, with leaders reaffirming their commitment to surpass the current bilateral trade figure of approximately $22.1 billion, aiming for a target of $24 billion in the near future. As part of their strategic priorities, both nations are concentrating on technology and innovation, particularly in areas like satellite technology, semiconductors, and agricultural biotechnology. The partnership also envisions promoting supply-chain integration, local economic connectivity, and green energy cooperation to enhance regional competitiveness and energy security.

President Tô Lâm expressed Vietnam’s dedication to strengthening ties with Thailand and emphasized the importance of working together to promote peace, stability, and sustainable development in Southeast Asia. The agreements and action plans reflect a shared commitment to advancing collaboration in key areas, ensuring that both countries benefit from enhanced partnerships and mutual growth.
