Vietnam Pledges to Bolster ASEAN–Russia Strategic Partnership

Vietnam has underscored its pivotal role in enhancing collaboration between ASEAN and Russia in the wake of the ASEAN–Russia Commemorative Summit, which celebrated 35 years of dialogue between the two entities. Vietnamese Foreign Minister Lê Hoài Trung emphasized Vietnam’s substantial contributions to the summit, which aimed to bolster ASEAN’s central role and support a deepening of the strategic partnership with Russia. The Vietnamese delegation, led by Prime Minister Lê Minh Hưng, prioritized dialogue, cooperation, peaceful dispute resolution, and adherence to international law during the summit.

In a bid to broaden cooperation, Vietnam proposed expanding partnerships in key sectors such as energy, trade, transport connectivity, agriculture, and digital transformation. A significant outcome of the summit was the adoption of new frameworks designed to strengthen ASEAN–Russia cooperation until 2030, with energy identified as a crucial component of this partnership. Further demonstrating its commitment to future regional collaboration, Vietnam announced plans to host the ASEAN–Russia Young Diplomats Summit in 2027.

On the sidelines of the summit, Vietnamese Prime Minister Lê Minh Hưng engaged in discussions with Russian President Vladimir Putin. These talks reaffirmed the mutual commitment to deepening the Vietnam–Russia Comprehensive Strategic Partnership, with a focus on expanding cooperation in key areas such as energy, trade, infrastructure, science and technology, education, and transportation.

Vietnam has expressed optimism that the summit’s outcomes will not only strengthen ASEAN–Russia relations but also enhance regional stability and foster new opportunities for economic growth and cooperation across the Eurasian region. By focusing on strategic areas and future initiatives, Vietnam aims to contribute significantly to the evolving partnership between ASEAN and Russia.
