Thailand Urges Cambodia to Resolve Border Conflict Without Global Involvement

Thailand has issued a cautionary statement regarding its diplomatic relations with Cambodia, warning that ongoing border disputes could hinder reconciliation efforts if continuously brought to international attention. Thai Foreign Minister Sihasak Phuangketkeow emphasized that persistent allegations against Thailand at international venues could damage the trust-building initiatives between the two nations.

This warning was prompted by remarks from Cambodia’s ambassador to the United Nations, Keo Chhea, during a UN Security Council session. Chhea highlighted the humanitarian impacts resulting from previous border clashes between Thailand and Cambodia, including civilian displacement, the destruction of homes and infrastructure, and damage to the Preah Vihear Temple, a site recognized by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site.

In response, Thailand criticized the statements made by Cambodia, describing them as one-sided and not aligned with the spirit of a joint agreement established in late 2025. This agreement was intended to foster reconciliation and restore confidence between the two countries.

Cambodia, on its part, reiterated its commitment to resolving border issues through peaceful dialogue, adherence to international law, and respect for existing ceasefire agreements, according to government spokesperson Pen Bona.

The longstanding border issues, particularly around the disputed area near the Preah Vihear Temple, have been a point of contention that has intermittently strained the relations between Thailand and Cambodia. Both nations have expressed their intentions to maintain peace and continue diplomatic discussions despite these ongoing challenges.
